Patrick Kim and Kevin Tu become the 25th UH students since 2010 to receive Goldwater Scholarships

University Honors juniors, Patrick Kim and Kevin Tu, have been named recipients of this year’s Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. This marks the seventh consecutive year, and the 25th time since 2010 that at least one UH student has been named a Goldwater Scholar. Of approximately 5,000 applicants, Kim and Tu were selected to receive this year’s award.

Established by Congress in 1986, the Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation provides the nation’s most prestigious, merit-based award for outstanding sophomores and juniors preparing for a research career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. United States Senator Barry Goldwater (R-AZ) served from 1953-64, then again from 1969-87. He was known to have a keen interest in science.

Patrick Kim is pursuing a double-degree in electrical engineering and physics. The recipient of a President’s Scholarship, Kim aims to become a plasma physicist and to contribute to the creation of a commercial nuclear fusion reactor that provides power to the electrical grid.

Kevin Tu is seeking a double-degree in biological sciences and economics. A Banneker-Key Scholar, Tu will pursue a PhD in cancer biology and work to create gene-based therapies for patients.

Congratulations Patrick and Kevin!
