K. Frances Lieder

Collegiate Fellow, Health Matters
Interdisciplinary Theater Studies

Biography

K. Frances Lieder received her Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Theatre Studies with a minor in Asian Languages and Cultures from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Previously, she was the UCIS Visiting Professor in Contemporary Global Issues at the University of Pittsburgh and a Visiting Assistant Professor of English/Theatre at the College of Saint Rose. Her current book manuscript examines how performance and embodiment in urban India offer activists around the world opportunities to reframe mainstream sexual violence discourse to focus on issues of everyday violence. In her teaching, Lieder encourages students to decolonize their understanding of cultural production by foregrounding BIPOC artists and theorists and the role of affect and embodiment in the formation of knowledge. She also practices a pedagogical philosophy of ungrading in order to give students more control over their own learning methods and goals. She has published articles on trauma, theatre, Indian cultures, and education in TDR: The Drama Review, Asian Theatre Journal, Theatre Topics, and Peace and Change.
