Jessica Vitak

Biography

Jessica Vitak is an associate professor and faculty director for the doctoral program in the College of Information Studies, as well as an affiliate faculty member in the Communication Department and the Joint Program for Survey Methodology. She received her PhD in Media & Information Studies from Michigan State University. In her research, she examines social and ethical implications of big data, identifies user perceptions of risks posed by new technologies, and designs systems to enhance end-user privacy. She is particularly interested in privacy risks that blur boundaries between home, school, and work and how they have been exacerbated by the increasing popularity of surveillance technologies. Dr. Vitak was named a Top 100 Woman in AI Ethics for 2023 and is a current fellow for the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT).
