Biography

Jared Novick holds a PhD in Cognitive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences and in the Program in Neuroscience and Cognitive Science at the University of Maryland. His research interests include how memory and attention assist people’s ability to understand language in real-time, as the input unfolds moment to moment during listening and reading. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in psycholinguistics and an I-Series course on how to understand the research behind the media headlines in psychology, which is really about the importance of scientific literacy. He recently edited a book entitled Cognitive and Working Memory Training and has authored several journal articles including “Direct impact of cognitive control on sentence processing and comprehension”, and “Does integrating a code-switch during comprehension engage cognitive control?”, both published in 2020. He has long experience in the University Honors program and, in 2018, won the Excellence in Teaching Award from the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences for distinctive contributions to student instruction.
