Departmental Honors

Our curriculum is designed to enable UH students hone the skills, curiosity, and self-awareness required to flourish in departmental and collegiate honors programs.

After receiving their citations in UH, students are encouraged to continue by completing upper-level honors coursework in their major, working with a faculty mentor, and conducting independent research and scholarly work culminating in an honors thesis. Whether preparing for postgraduate study, developing a new business, or simply pursuing new knowledge for its own sake, departmental and collegiate honors programs are a powerful way for students to pursue innovative research and discovery in their particular field of study. Admission to these programs varies by department/college, and interested students should contact individual programs for further information.

What support is available for departmental honors students?

The Honors College offers one-time, need-based research grants of $500 for departmental and collegiate honors students. These grants help support honors thesis research or travel to to a professional conference related to the thesis. Selection is based on academic merit, supporting materials, and financial need. More information about these grants may be found here.

What if I'm unable to complete a required course?

Students who are unable to take a required departmental/collegiate honors course may apply to develop an “honors-option” course in order to complete their honors program. Students enroll in a non-honors course and create an honors-quality addendum to the syllabus. Permission is required from students’ honors program advisor and from the Honors College. Application information is available here.
