Ross Salawitch holds a PhD in Applied Physics from Harvard University and is currently a Professor in the Departments of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science, Chemistry and Biochemistry, and the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center at the University of Maryland. His research interests involve quantification of the effects of human activity on the composition of Earth’s atmosphere by the development of computer models used to analyze a wide variety of observations, with a focus on stratospheric ozone depletion and recovery, air quality, the global carbon cycle, and climate change. The seminar he teaches in UH draws upon his climate change research effort and is taught in a manner that involves various types of media, numerous learning enrichment events taking advantage of the close proximity to Washington, DC, and most importantly extensive student participation.
