Max Barnewitz holds an MFA in Comics from the California College of the Arts and an MA in Comparative Literature & Cultural Studies from the University of Utah. They were most recently an instructor in Art and Art History at the University of Utah where they have also worked with Undergraduate Student Experts on Teaching through the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence. Max has extensive experience teaching and workshopping comics and zines as a social justice practice. Their pedagogy prioritizes the making, sharing, and reading of comics (and other marginalized images) whose underground and defiant qualities transform culture. They engage art across communities as an organizer of Salt Lake City’s Grid Zine Fest and in other collaborative art spaces, and their art has been exhibited and featured in multiple festivals, media, and publications ranging from www.electricsqueak.com to Zines Journal. When they are not reading or drawing comics, Max enjoys spending time hiking with friends, going to farmers markets, and spoiling their dog, Tally.
