Julia Steinberg

Biography

Julia Steinberg is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family Science in the School of
Public Health at the University of Maryland, College Park. She received her PhD in Social
Psychology from Arizona State University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in abortion
and reproductive health at the University of California, San Francisco Bixby Center for Global
Reproductive Health. She then was an Assistant Professor at UCSF in the Health Psychology
area of the Department of Psychiatry before coming to UMD. Her research is at the intersection
of mental health and family planning and has examined whether there is evidence for the claim
that abortion harms women’s mental health, what influences mental health around an abortion,
and the role of mental health in family planning behaviors, experiences, and decision-making. In
both 2019 and 2020, she first-authored an article that was in the top 10 most-talked abortion
articles of the year.
