Cody Buntain

Biography

Cody Buntain is an assistant professor in the College of Information Studies, where he studies online information and social media, specifically how people use online information spaces during times of unrest. His focus is on information quality, preventing manipulation, and enhancing resilience during these moments. He is a recipient of a DARPA Young Faculty Award to study social media during conflict and identify emerging areas of online influence and is the co-founder of the Center for AI, Data, and Conflict. He is also the co-chair for Education and Workforce Development in the new NIST-/NSF-funded Trustworthy AI for Law and Society Institute at UMD and GWU. Dr. Buntain has presented his work in these areas to the Canadian Senate and the Maryland State Senate. This work has been covered by The New York Times, The Washington Post, WIRED, and other popular press outlets.
