Susan Moeller is Professor of Media and International Affairs, and Director of Doctoral Studies at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism, University of Maryland, College Park. She has written dozens of articles and book chapters; her own books include Compassion Fatigue: How the Media Sell Disease, Famine, War and Death and Packaging Terrorism: Co-opting the News for Politics and Profit. She was a senior fellow at Harvard’s Kennedy School and a professor at Brandeis and Princeton universities. She was twice a Fulbright Professor, in Pakistan and Thailand. Moeller co-founded the Salzburg Academy on Media & Global Change in Austria, which will celebrate its 20^thanniversary next year. She has also long been a visiting professor in China and Singapore, teaching research courses in digital media to Chinese, Taiwanese, Hong Kong and Singaporean undergraduate and graduate students. Moeller launched Maryland’s signature Media Literacy course shortly after 9/11 — it was one of the first in the United States. Over the decades, she has taught thousands of students in that class and written extensively on media literacy; she serves on Maryland’s Public Television Advisory Board on Media Literacy. Moeller’s awards include being named a Carnegie Scholar, the State of Maryland’s Teacher of the Year, and the University of Maryland’s Graduate Faculty Mentor of the Year. Her AM and PhD are from Harvard and her BA is from Yale.
