Professor Kumar completed his Doctoral degree at the London School of Economics in 2007. He had been teaching at Universities around the US before starting at UMD in 2018. His research interests focus on Anglo-American political thought, specifically in the work of John Stuart Mill. His teaching has included a wide range of courses like Intro to Political Theory and Philosophy; Global Justice; and the Politics of Bicycling. He also has an appointment at the University of Maryland Global campus where he teaches in the Philosophy department

Outside of the classroom, Professor Kumar tinkers with his several bicycles, and plays drums and percussion with his fellow musicians.
