Brian Gilmore was born and raised in Washington D.C. and is a graduate of Archbishop Carroll High School. Currently, he is Senior Lecturer in the MLAW program in Government and Politics. He is a long time public interest lawyer in Washington D.C. and Michigan and served as clinical professor for 16 years at two distinguished law schools – Howard University School of Law and Michigan State University College of Law. He is the author numerous scholarly works on subjects ranging from housing discrimination, poverty, civil procedure, and criminal law policy. He is also a poet, writer, and historian and the author of four collections of poetry including come see about me marvin (Wayne State University Press 2019), a 2020 Michigan Notable Book Award recipient. His latest book is No More Worlds To Conquer: The Black Poet in Washington D.C. (Georgetown University Press 2026). At UMCP, he teaches MLAW courses including one of the required core courses for the minor, MLAW 305 Law and Legal Institutions where students learn administrative agency functions and executive policy in the context of daily government operations. His other courses include U.S. Supreme Court and American Society, and Land, Shelter, and Social Justice. Through the University Honors Program, he will be teaching Fundamentals of Equal Access to Justice beginning in Fall 2026.
