Siv B. Lie (she/her) is an associate professor in the School of Music at UMD, where she has been teaching since 2017. Her research examines how Romani cultural producers use music, language, and other expressive forms to advance their own political and economic interests. Her first book, Django Generations: Hearing Ethnorace, Citizenship, and Jazz Manouche in France (University of Chicago Press, 2021), shows how tensions between racial identities and national belonging unfold in French jazz industries. Her current project explores the politics of artistic approaches to French Romani genocide commemoration. She works in the disciplines of ethnomusicology, anthropology, and musicology, and earned her PhD in music from New York University. Learn more about Siv’s work at www.sivblie.com.
