Max Barnewitz

Collegiate Fellow: Change the Narrative | Gateway Coordinator

Max Barnewitz (they/them) has an MFA in Comics from California College of the Arts and an MA in Comparative Literature & Cultural Studies from the University of Utah. Prior to joining the UH faculty, they taught experimental illustration at the University of Utah, where they have also worked with the Undergraduate Student Experts on Teaching program. Max has extensive experience teaching and workshopping comics and zines as a social justice practice. Their pedagogy prioritizes the making, sharing, and reading of comics (and other marginalized images) whose underground and defiant qualities transform culture. Max loves to engage art across communities, and has participated in organizing numerous zine and artis festivals. Max’s art has been exhibited and featured in multiple festivals, media, publications and galleries including Finch Lane Gallery, Storybox Comics, and the Pyramid Atlantic Art Center. When they are not reading or drawing comics, Max enjoys spending time hiking, going to farmers markets, and befriending all the neighborhood dogs.
